Johnson County craft beer fans have been eagerly awaiting this day for four long years — a delay caused, in part, by one founder’s refusal to compromise on his vision for his latest brewhouse.
But now Stockyards Brewing Co.’s Overland Park taproom has set a Jan. 30 opening at 10310 Mastin St. — the site of a former Piggly Wiggly and, more recently, a National American University campus. (Brewing equipment is in place, with the production portion of the facility expected to come online later this year.)
Husband-and-wife Greg Bland and Meg Moore founded Stockyards in 2016 in what was once part of the old Golden Ox steakhouse in the Stockyards District of the West Bottoms. They also opened a location in the new single-terminal Kansas City International Airport (KCI) in early 2023.
They also had been casually scouting expansion sites in the Crossroads and Parkville, forgoing Kansas, which required businesses that served alcohol to generate 30 percent of their sales from food. Stockyards does not sell food.
When Johnson County residents repealed that “outdated” law, the Blands found the ideal site in Overland Park — a 25,000-square-foot former grocery store just east of U.S. 69 — offering easier access to fans across the metro.
“But post COVID it was harder to find lending partners, and we did not want to compromise on what we think it should look like,” said Bland, who also goes by the title “trail boss.”
Now the 6,000-square-foot taproom will open with a “cowboy-meets-midcentury-grocery” decor. The space has five large TVs, unique artwork, and will later have a viewing window into brewhouse production.
Construction and design is in partnership with local contractor Wolf21, which also worked on such projects as Jim’s Alley Bar in the Crossroads, and the food hall in the Cascade Hotel in the Country Club Plaza District.
The Blands want it to be a venue for bimonthly meet-ups, fundraisers, and milestone celebrations, and later live music. It also will be available to rent for private events.
Stockyards’ Cerveza Royale is the fan favorite Mexican-style lager, a gold-medal winner at last year’s Missouri Beer Cup along with three other winning Stockyards styles. The rotating IPA Rodeo Series, Nudie Suit sours, and seasonals like Stocktoberfest, are other popular choices.
The taproom also will offer non-alcoholic (NA) drinks with little to no alcohol. Customers can bring in food.
“We want it to be more of a gathering space than specifically a spot to drink alcohol,” Bland said.
Hours are set for 4 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays thru Thursdays; 1 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 1 to 8 p.m. Sundays. Stockyards is expected to be closed on Mondays.
Coming up: Bland also is a partner in the new Stag & Harp Public House, opening at 1403 W. 39th St., later this year.
